Aberdeen Uni’s English Literature Society has launched an urgent appeal for new members, as fears have been raised over the future of the society.

According to current members, the society, which organises monthly performance nights at the Blue Lamp (long a staple of the Aberdeen creative scene), could cease operations due to a lack of interest in committee roles.

Posting to Instagram two days ago, the committee initially indicated that the society would not return for the next academic year.

“It is with great sadness that we announce the end of our wonderful society,” the committee wrote.

“Unfortunately, we are unable to continue due to a lack of interest for new committee members. It’s heartbreaking to see the end of this era, but we are proud of what we’ve accomplished this year…”

The announcement was met with an outpouring of support from students and alumni, with several volunteering to serve on next year's committee.

In a post to Instagram yesterday, the committee announced that an emergency AGM would be held next week, noting: “We’ve received an astonishing amount of support to keep the society going. Thank you all!"

"We’re having an emergency AGM next Wednesday, May 1st at 6pm at New Kings NK7.”

The Lit Soc is seeking applicants for the roles of President, Vice President, Treasurer, Events Manager, Social Media Secretary, Academic Liaison, First Year Representative, and General Member.
