I’m happy library hours are cut and you should be too

I love the way these hours are cut!

The Taylor Library will only be open until 5:00 p.m. and closed on Sundays! Despite the emails encouraging you to take up arms in response to this, it’s a good thing, really. The Gaudie may have meticulously reported on it and the impact the decision is having, but I’m the only editor you can trust. You will still get the exact same amount of work done, just somewhere else I promise. Let’s take a look at your options.

The Sir Duncan Rice Library

This is the university’s main library and it has to be equipped to cover all of your studying needs. Instead of stressing over your exams why don’t you sample its completely reasonably priced food? Drink a bottle of coffee from a brand that, like our uni, is known for treating their staff well? Remember to take toilet breaks where you can use the aeroplane-esque facilities. Close your eyes for long enough and you could be anywhere, anywhere else. You can get your copious amounts of work done on the first – third floors, you may also slip into a long conversation with a person you met once in first year and haven’t seen since. Or you can try out the new healthy study option on floors 4 – 7 where you get to stand to do your work. Yes, by the time you make it up on one of the two working lifts there will be no seats, but your body will thank you later, I’m sure.

The divinity library

Yeah, I have nothing for this one actually. I left Catholic education, so I have been exiled from this library, what can you do about it!

Your accommodation

Whether you’re in student accommodation or a private flat, it’s the perfect place to get your work done! A peaceful environment where the cupboards are packed with snacks and the heating is on full blast— all thanks to Student Award Agency Scotland. Plus, there is nothing distracting about being surrounded by roommates you like, the availability of mindless doom scrolling, or your bed.

Cafes

This is an option I can’t judge too harshly because it was an option last year even when the library didn’t shut until after the six o’clock news. Studying in a cafe is very chic. You can get cute instagram pictures and overpriced coffee! What’s not to love? You can spiral about whether or not the staff hates you for just sitting here and not ordering anything. Once you give into the pressure, you have new dilemmas. Should I order another coffee? I don’t need it but I finished the last one an hour ago, what if someone needs this table? Again, you will get the same amount of work done.

Pubs

An option for only advanced students. You really need to be able to toe the line between writing an essay and a pint just so happens to be in your hand and I cannot see the words on the screen. It’s a line I walk expertly! In fact this whole essay was written in a pub, that is why I make so much sense throughout, and I was gonna keep this detail to myself but the person behind the reduced hours is also here! That must be why the decision makes so much sense too!
