On January 7th Renee Nicole Good was fatally shot by an agent of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), sparking mass condemnation and protests across America.
Her shooting comes after a year of ICE raids under the Trump administration. People in immigration detention facilities hit an all time high in December 2025 with a reported 68,400 people being held across the states.
In 2025 at least 327,000 people were deported, with a reported 32 people having died in ICE facilities in 2025.
These increasingly aggressive ICE raids had been met with condemnation from both the public and elected officials. In June, protests in LA over these ICE raids were met with 700 US Marines and 4,000 National Guard troops being sent to LA by president Trump. These protests lasted 4 days but frequent demonstrations persisted across the country.
On January 6th of this year, the Trump administration prepared for 2,000 ICE agents to be deployed to the Minneapolis area to conduct the “largest immigration operation ever”, according to the agency’s director, Todd Lyons. Minnesota Governor Tim Waltz commented on the surge saying “a war is being waged against Minnesota.”
The presence of ICE in Minnesota is particularly concerning to the Somali population in the city who are reporting harassment, vandalism and threats. President Trump himself called the community “garbage.”
On the morning of the 7th, ICE agents were confronted by residents of Minnesota protesting their presence. This included people blowing whistles – a method used by protesters to alert people that ICE is in the area.
In footage of the morning Good can be seen in her car waving another car past her. Then, as two ICE agents approach her car with one trying to open the driver side door, Good begins to reverse the car and drive away. The ice agent, now standing on the left side of the windshield, draws his firearm and fires three shots. Good is fatally wounded, reportedly being shot in the face up to four times. A man present at the scene informs ICE agents that he is a physician and asks to check Good’s pulse but he is blocked, with an ICE agent replying “I don’t care.”
Two hours after the shooting, the Department of Homeland Security released a statement that the shooting was justified, stating:
“An ICE officer, fearing for his life, the lives of his fellow law enforcement and the safety of the public, fired defensive shots.”
President Trump, along with Vice President JD Vance and Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, have stated that Good was attempting to run over the ICE agents, which many news outlets report to be contrary to the video footage. Noem labelled Good’s actions an “act of domestic terrorism.”
Good’s mother spoke to her local newspaper about her daughter, saying:
“She’s taken care of people all her life. She was loving, forgiving and affectionate. She was an amazing human being.”
In released body cam footage, Good’s partner can be seen with a whistle around her neck, confronting the ICE agents, whilst Good remains in the car. Good’s former husband stated that Good was not personally part of any activism.
The shooting evoked immediate protests across Minnesota, with hundreds gathering at the scene of the shooting overnight. A memorial for Good has also been set up by the community and Goods’ partner. Protests have spread to New York and California, with hundreds across the country demonstrating their deep frustration and fear over ICE raids.
The shooting of Good is now being investigated by the FBI, with the officer being identified as Jonathan Ross.
