You might know Emily McKay, graduating in Psychology, for her words in The Gaudie or for producing short-form content about campus published on the University’s social media. She also writes for Her Campus Aberdeen – the local branch of an American media organisation with hundreds of chapters worldwide. In the following short interview, Emily explained what the community magazine means to her, and how she got involved.
Hi, can you introduce yourself?
“My name is Emily McKay and I’m the Her Campus secretary! I started out as a writer and decided to become more involved with the society during my last year at university.”
For those who have never heard of it, what is Her Campus magazine?
“Her Campus is an American based organisation with chapters across the world including Aberdeen. The local Aberdeen printed edition began with Evelyn Bayerlein, the society’s 2022 – 2024 President, who wanted to showcase our talented writer’s work. It’s been really amazing to bring together all our hard work across the term into something we can distribute around campus especially with the decline of physical media.”
What makes Her Campus different from other student media?
“We are a female and non-binary led magazine that aims to bring people together to share and write stories as well as build community. With what the world is becoming, student journalism is more important than ever. I’m so happy that we have organisations across campus like Her Campus Aberdeen and The Gaudie to amplify our voices.”
Why did you decide to get involved?
“I’ve always enjoyed writing in some form or another: I wanted to get away from the grind of university coursework in a space where I could discuss my own ideas and passions. I was given a very enthusiastic pitch at the Fresher’s Fayre and found a place in this little community.”
What are your favourite pieces in this year’s edition?
“Everyone who contributed something should be so proud of what they’ve made, when it all comes together it showcases so much talent. I really resonated with Lucy Gardiner’s article ‘An Argument for Inconvenience’ and enjoyed Holly Hunter’s piece about Irish pride’s connection with music. I’ll also be quite cheeky and say that I’m really proud of my article ‘The Year Three Yips Hypothesis: Navigating Higher Education’. It combined my own personal experience with some research elements I learned within my degree.”
How can people read the latest Aberdeen edition?
“Copies of this year’s edition have been distributed around campus and the pieces can additionally be read online at www.hercampus.com/school/aberdeen/.”
How can people get involved?
“Students can get involved with the society after Summer break. Some people just come along for the social element, but regular writer’s meetings are held to bounce off ideas and concepts for new pieces. I really enjoy graphic design so I was also able to get stuck into that which was so much fun. I’d really recommend Her Campus to anyone who wants to write some meaningful stuff and be part of a creative environment. Whether you’re passionate about journalism, want to build a writing portfolio or just enjoy sharing your thoughts, there’s something for everyone.”
