NASA’s Curiosity rover, which has been exploring the surface of Mars since 2012, continues its mission of traversing the Red Planet despite suffering significant wear and tear to its wheels. The damage, exposed in new images released by NASA in September 2024, showcases significant structural issues caused by the Rover’s Martian journey. This marks another milestone in Curiosity’s voyage across the rugged terrain, which has taken a severe toll on the robotic explorer.
Curiosity was initially designed for a two-year mission, but the rover has outlasted expectations, operating on Mars for over 12 years, or 4,323 Martian days, known as Sols. During this time, the rover has traversed more than 20 miles across Gale Crater, providing valuable insights into Mars’ past, including evidence that the planet may have once supported microbial life.
However, Mars’ rocky landscape, characterised by sharp and jagged rocks, has caused considerable damage on Curiosity’s aluminum wheels. The news images display a large hole in the middle right wheel, along with other visible cracks and punctures. According to NASA engineers, Curiosity has been enduring “abuse” from the Martian surface for years. The damage, while striking, has not yet compromised the rover’s ability to function and continue its mission.
The damage to Curiosity’s wheels is not a new issue. As early as 2013, engineers began noticing wear on the wheels, and by 2017, the damage had become more pronounced. In response, NASA introduced software updates to change how Curiosity navigates rough ground. The new algorithms helped reduce the pressure on the wheels by modifying their speed and traction, prolonging the rover’s operational life on the far away planet.
NASA has closely monitored the progression of wheel damage over the years, using Curiosity’s Mars Hand Lens Imager (MAHLI) to capture detailed images of the wear and tear that the rover has suffered. Despite this, mission operations engineer Ashley Stroupe assured that Curiosity is “still holding up well,” and there are no immediate plans to retire the rover.
Curiosity’s continued operation is a testament to the robust engineering behind its design. The data gathered from its journey has even helped NASA improve the design of future rovers. For example, Perseverance, Curiosity’s successor, was equipped with more durable titanium wheels based on the lessons learned from Curiosity’s experiences on Mars. Hopefully, by using the information from Curiosity’s damage, Perseverance will be a stronger piece of machinery and able to withstand agaisnt the rough Martian conditions.
While the wear and tear on Curiosity’s wheels serve as a reminder of the harsh environment on Mars, the rover remains an essential tool in NASA’s mission to explore the planet. As it continues its journey across Gale Crater, Curiosity is expected to keep providing valuable data that will inform future missions and deepen our understanding of Mars’ history.
Despite its appearance, Curiosity shows no signs of stopping, proving that even after more than a decade on a distant planet, this robotic explorer still has much to offer.
