God of War: Laufey was revealed during Sony Interactive Entertainment’s State of Play presentation on the 2nd of June, 2026, generating significant discussion among fans of the franchise. Although a release date has not yet been announced, the game has so far only been confirmed for PlayStation 5. It is the first mainline God of War title to feature a protagonist other than Kratos and is the third entry in the Norse Saga. According to Norse mythology, Laufey is a Goddess, Loki’s mother, and a consort of the giant Fárbauti. Within the God of War universe, she is the last guardian of the giants, possessing powerful prophetic abilities and wielding the Leviathan Axe. Her actions serve as the catalyst for the franchise’s Norse Saga. Over the course of two games, she is not an in-game character per se but is extensively mentioned throughout God of War.
Although Laufey, popularly known as Faye, was rarely seen on screen in God of War (2018) and God of War: Ragnarök, she remained one of the most influential figures in the Norse Saga. As Kratos’ wife and Atreus’ mother, her final wishes set the events of the story in motion, while her knowledge of the giants’ prophecies helped shape the journeys of both characters. Even after her death, her presence continued to guide the narrative through memories, visions, and revelations about her past. Despite her limited appearances, Faye became one of the franchise’s most significant and enigmatic characters, making her a natural choice for a standalone adventure.
God of War: Laufey follows events right after her cremation. Faye’s soul enters Everywhen, an afterlife for gods from all mythologies. She realises that she is not in the Light of Alfheim and must do whatever it takes to ensure that the future she envisioned for her family remains intact. In this chapter, she is caught in another war with other deceased gods who want power in the afterlife.
A taste of Laufey’s gameplay was shown at the programme to excite the franchise fans! It showcased fast-paced aerial combat, fluid movement, and a greater emphasis on magic compared with previous games in the series. Players will require quick reflexes to combine offensive and defensive abilities while facing fierce opponents. Alongside her remarkable combat and magic skills, Faye can wield iconic weapons like the Leviathan Axe. In Everywhen, she is trusted with another powerful sword by its guardian, and we see it being used in its full glory. Faye, as the most powerful guardian of the giants, can manipulate souls, and in the afterlife realm, her soul magic’s strength is magnified. In the trailer, we see Faye smashing her palm at an opponent, causing their soul to detach from their body, and she strikes the soul directly. This opens up more creative combat combinations for the players.
Even though this game showcases one of the strongest and most important characters in the franchise, there have been a lot of mixed reactions from gamers. Some were angry about a non-Kratos protagonist, some were miffed about playing as a Goddess warrior, while some were excited about the faster combat and magic-focused gameplay. There was also speculation that the game was merely a spin-off, but Sony Studio clarified that this chapter occurs simultaneously with God of War and God of War: Ragnarök.
Whether God of War: Laufey will live up to expectations remains to be seen. However, its announcement marks a bold move by the franchise by choosing someone other than Kratos to be a protagonist, and Sony now has the opportunity to explore one of the series’ most influential yet mysterious characters. As fans await more gameplay and story details, the game has already sparked discussions about the future direction of the God of War universe and how far it can expand beyond its iconic protagonist.
