Bp Tutoring Scheme

Everything you need to know

The bp Tutoring Scheme allows University of Aberdeen students interested in working with young people to act as ambassadors for higher education across Aberdeen City and Aberdeenshire.

The aim is to be positive role models and show that learning and further education are both enjoyable and important.

Over an 8-week period, for one day a week, bp tutors are matched with a school and attend classes (that fit their schedule) where they support pupils and teachers.

Typical activities include small group or one-to-one work, assisting pupils who need additional support, helping with discussions, problem solving, revision, and general classroom tasks. Activities do vary depending on whether placed in a primary or secondary class.

Students from any discipline can participate as long as they are at least in their second year at the University of Aberdeen; they are more than welcome to apply.

Emails will be sent regarding meetings and application deadlines soon. The process usually includes: completing an online application highlighting skills and motivation, attending an interview, and if successful attending a briefing session where plenty of information about the placement will be given and find out whether matched with the preferred school. Placements begin around January/February, followed by an award ceremony in spring.

Feedback is highly encouraged throughout the placement. Julia Leng oversees the bp Tutoring Scheme at the University of Aberdeen.

My personal experience

If you get selected (and I really hope you do) we were told in our first meeting that our patience would “go through the roof”. I remember thinking to myself: no way, I am the most patient person I know.

After the first day, I felt it. I thought I already had it, but this experience strengthened it more than I expected. You become more thoughtful and more caring. It really does prepare you for the real world (and that is just one of the many skills you will gain).

No matter what you want to do later in life, this scheme gives you a meaningful experience.

A little warning: you will form bonds. If you’re anything like me, you will get attached and the children will get attached to you.

They will get attached because they will find in you the person they need, someone closer in age who understands them.

Go and be yourself. Be open. Prepare for hugs and little thank you notes (maybe even tears at the end of the scheme).

It’s definitely something that you don’t want to miss.

You will finish the program wanting more, and you can. I did, and if you’re lucky, you might also be offered the opportunity to continue.

If anyone has questions or needs help with applications, you may contact me through the Life & Style email. Happy to help with anything!

Good luck!
