the Peter&#8217;s Principle&#8217;s house of cards must collapse&#8217; on campus (Photo supplied)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Dan Cutts, UCU Aberdeen co-chair, said that by rejecting the UCU proposal, senior management \u201chave put staff livelihoods and the student experience at risk.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Under the rejected agreement, academics would have been guaranteed that they won\u2019t be forced to leave for at least six months, with the university instead running schemes such as voluntary severance and pursuing savings elsewhere.<\/p>\n<p>The rejection is \u201cto the great disappointment of staff and students,\u201d added UCU official Mike Williamson.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlthough the proposal was submitted last week, UCU were required to wait a further week for a response due to the Principal\u2019s absence in the United States,\u201d Cutts claimed.<\/p>\n<p>While staff stood at picket lines last week, the principal flew to New York City for the Tartan Week Parade amid <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyrecord.co.uk\/news\/outgoing-uni-boss-facing-12m-36832259\">questions<\/a> on senior management travel expenses.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_7359\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7359\" style=\"width: 653px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-7359 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gaudie.co.uk\/wpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/WhatsApp-Image-2026-04-21-at-10.38.02-e1776769763222.jpeg\" alt=\"Principal Edwards attends Tartan Parade in NYC (Source: Clare Livingston via LinkedIn)\" width=\"653\" height=\"660\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.gaudie.co.uk\/wpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/WhatsApp-Image-2026-04-21-at-10.38.02-e1776769763222.jpeg 653w, https:\/\/www.gaudie.co.uk\/wpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/WhatsApp-Image-2026-04-21-at-10.38.02-e1776769763222-297x300.jpeg 297w, https:\/\/www.gaudie.co.uk\/wpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/WhatsApp-Image-2026-04-21-at-10.38.02-e1776769763222-416x420.jpeg 416w, https:\/\/www.gaudie.co.uk\/wpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/WhatsApp-Image-2026-04-21-at-10.38.02-e1776769763222-150x152.jpeg 150w, https:\/\/www.gaudie.co.uk\/wpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/WhatsApp-Image-2026-04-21-at-10.38.02-e1776769763222-300x303.jpeg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 653px) 100vw, 653px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-7359\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Principal Edwards attends Tartan Parade in NYC (Source: Clare Livingston via LinkedIn)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>UCU rep Cutts said, \u201cThroughout this period, we have consistently demonstrated our willingness to engage constructively and resolve this dispute.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A University of Aberdeen spokesperson said that senior management \u201cdisappointingly fell short of mutual agreement\u201d with UCU yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>The university added, \u201cWe remain unable to rule out compulsory redundancy, however have committed to prioritising every possible voluntary measure in seeking to avoid these.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Interim Senior Governor Gary McRae has previously <a href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/episode\/6kXTnL8R11vGLnrAKB0C4L\">told us<\/a> it would be financially irresponsible to rule out compulsory redundancies.<\/p>\n<p>The so-called Adapting for Continued Success programme to save or generate \u00a312 million over the next two years <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gaudie.co.uk\/wpress\/index.php\/news\/2026\/02\/27\/unprecedented-plans-to-axe-small-courses-approved\/\">aims<\/a> to phase out less popular courses and impose minimum staff-student ratios.<\/p>\n<p>21 PhD courses have already stopped recruiting, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.heraldscotland.com\/news\/26016747.aberdeen-university-pauses-21-postgraduate-courses\/\">reported<\/a> <i>The Herald, <\/i>with the university refusing to identify the withdrawn courses.<\/p>\n<p>Staff at the university worry that plans may threaten their livelihoods, with UCU deciding for industrial action over Principal Edward&#8217;s refusal to rule out compulsory redundancies.<\/p>\n<p>University Court will vote to approve restructuring plans on April 29th, with over 1,100 people signing an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.change.org\/p\/open-letter-to-university-of-aberdeen-court\">open letter<\/a> to court members asking them to reject restructuring plans.<\/p>\n<p>Academics in University Senate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gaudie.co.uk\/wpress\/index.php\/news\/2026\/04\/01\/new-10-day-strikes-confirmed-as-staff-warn-against-restructuring-plans\/\">voted<\/a> to oppose the restructuring proposals last month, a number of its members complaining that they could not see the data used to justify plans.<\/p>\n<p>UCU rep Williamson said, &#8220;University court meets next week and will be asking questions about why this strike action could not be avoided.
