Its stones hold secrets, and when the night air curls around King’s College Chapel, you can almost hear them whisper. The bells toll, the wind hushes, and somewhere under the altar, something knocks back.

It was during a folklore talk one quiet October evening that the first knock was heard; a faint tapping from beneath the tomb at the front of the chapel. Some brushed it off as pipes, others as settling stone. But the “folklore whisperer,” a local historian known for chasing the supernatural, leaned in and smiled. “That,” he said, “is the Bishop reminding us he’s still here.”

No one ever found the body of Bishop William Elphinstone, founder of the University of Aberdeen. When the Reformation swept through Scotland, it’s believed his remains were secretly moved to protect them from destruction. Yet the tomb beneath the chapel’s altar still stands, empty, silent, and occasionally, not so silent. Students have reported cold spots, shivers, and that same hollow tapping echoing through the marble.

The Path of Philosophers and Spirits

Step outside the chapel and follow the narrow lane beside it-the Philosopher’s Path. It snakes toward the McRobert Garden, and on foggy nights, the mist clings thick to the cobblestones. Some say the path remembers the scholars who once wandered it, muttering Latin prayers and questions of eternity. Others swear they’ve heard footsteps pacing behind them, only to turn and find nothing but shadows.

A Garden Gnome, or Something Else?

In the McRobert Garden hides a strange little secret: a tiny door carved low into the wall; the so-called brownie’s door. Students joke it’s where the university’s lost Wi-Fi signal goes to die, but older locals tell another tale. They say it’s the entrance for a household spirit, a small guardian who kept watch over the garden. Disturb it, and your luck withers; leave it untouched, and the flowers will bloom brighter. On certain nights, gardeners claim to find tools moved and tiny footprints pressed into the soil.

And mind the grass, too. In Old Aberdeen, there’s a superstition that if the grass over an old grave grows too long, the dead beneath can rise. Groundskeepers keep the chapel lawns meticulously trimmed, perhaps for more than aesthetic reasons.

Ghosts of High Street

Old Aberdeen’s High Street has earned its haunted reputation a hundred times over. The most chilling story tells of a woman plagued by dreams of a murder beneath her floorboards. One night, she tore open a trapdoor, and there it was, a hidden cellar, the scene of a long-forgotten killing. The shopkeeper confirmed what she feared: the murder had happened exactly as she dreamt.

Further up the street, a phantom duelist still prowls near King’s College, sword flashing in moonlight that touches no blade. Monks in tattered robes drift along the cloisters, vanishing before dawn. Some nights, a faint chant hums through the air; a prayer for the dead, unanswered.

Old Aberdeen is beautiful by day, but when darkness falls, it’s something else entirely, a place where time folds in on itself, where every shadow might hold a memory, and where the past is never quite buried.

Old Aberdeen does not sleep.
