Directed by LoveDay Ingram, this enduring coming-of-age story encapsulates the complex but vibrant lives of Jo, Meg, Amy, and Beth March.

From Wednesday 14th to 17th May 2025, audiences were transported into the lives of four unique and high-spirited young women during the American Civil War era. His Majesty’s Theatre became home to a lively performance with experienced actors, including Grace Molony of Mary Queen of Scots and Call the Midwife’s Jack Ashton.

The novel itself is inspired by Alcott’s own life growing up beside her three sisters. Though the rendition I watched was written for theatre, Alcott’s voice is not lost. Staying true to the timely tale, all the while expertly translating it into a theatrical performance, is just one of the many talents of writer Casey and director Ingram. Such talents were displayed in the creative transition between scenes through a beautiful musical ensemble, and the singing of ‘Hallelujah’ breathed life into the religious elements of the time, while characters relied on their faith to move through challenging times.

Casey touched on the resistance as women and men started to break out of the social norms of the time — including important historical details such as the reformists in New York, where Jo ventures to become a writer. The transition of America into a modern nation most certainly influenced Alcott’s writing, to which Casey stayed true to, centering the performance around the female perspective in which it was originally written. The way Alcott fosters an environment of progressive thinking was expertly displayed in the sharp and witty dialogue of this show.

Each character takes on their own battles within — like Alcott, Casey emphasised the personality traits of each of the characters and how these make them differ from one another so greatly, despite being raised in the same environment. The onstage exploration of characters showed their traits as being both their greatest strengths and greatest weaknesses. The main character Jo is incredibly strong-willed, but also stubborn and short-tempered; these traits drove her to success but also led to some of her regrets. Other notable characters are that of ‘Marmee’, the motherly character who provides a voice of reason and stability, and also the comedic relief of character Aunt March who is bound to leave you in stitches. Through these characters, Casey reminded the audience of the importance of relying on family to keep one another afloat; an everlasting message.

This show was able to display a great deal about society, while simultaneously delving into the inner battles of individual characters. Incorporating Alcott’s wry criticism of society as four young, promising women navigate their options in life, without an extravagant plot needed to keep the audience captivated. The performance may have only been over two hours, yet the audience felt as though they were growing up beside the characters, feeling as if we, ourselves, were one of the March sisters. Little Women remains a beautiful work of art, brought to life on stage and screen, and for a short while, blessed the city of Aberdeen.

Louisa May Alcott’s novel Little Women was brought to life in the adaptation by Anne-Marie Casey of the same name.
