The program, in partnership with the Wood Foundation, offers paid full-time summer internships in third-sector organisations, spanning local, national, and international areas.

‘Interns with Impact’ launched in 2023, funding six internships in Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire, and has since expanded. Roles are largely based in Aberdeenshire, with two opportunities in Kirkintilloch and two in Uganda. The program offers two different structures: ten weeks of 30 hours or eight weeks of 35 hours. Part-time internships are also available during term time. Undergraduate students from any degree program can apply, though final-year students are ineligible for international placements.

Gayle Thompson, from the Careers Service, praised the scheme, saying, “There are some really interesting roles.” She encouraged students to thoroughly research the opportunities before applying. On what makes a candidate stand out, she highlighted the importance of CVs evidencing what the role requires and cover letters that emphasise motivation based on the job description.

To strengthen applications, Gayle suggested that students attend CV and cover letter workshops led by the Careers and Employability Service. She also reassured students that financial concerns should not be a barrier: “It’s fully paid. We don’t promote unpaid internships so that students aren’t disadvantaged. If students had any concerns, they should approach us.”

On why students should apply, Gayle said, “It’s such an amazing opportunity and we hope to get more funding. This is the third and final year of the program. We’re trying to make it as successful as possible, so hopefully we will receive funding for future years.”

She added, “Just apply—get engaged! Sometimes students discount the third sector. Study the roles, do more research. There’s lots of roles I think students would actually like if they opened their minds to the third sector.”

Students who are unsuccessful are encouraged to visit the Careers team, says Gayle. “It depends on what stage you were deselected”, she added. “Whether you were shortlisted or interviewed, maybe your interview wasn’t strong enough, or your CV could have a little more,” said Gayle. She also recommended that students connect with Impact Student Ambassadors via LinkedIn to ask any questions.

Applications for internships close 10th March 2025

Applications for Aberdeen Internships’ ‘Interns with Impact’ close on 10th March 2025.
