Just hours after the announcement of a ceasefire agreement, Israeli airstrikes struck Gaza, killing dozens, while a large-scale military operation in the West Bank has left at least 70 Palestinians dead since the start of the year.

The ceasefire, brokered by Qatar, Egypt, and the United States, was set to begin on Sunday. The agreement included a six-week truce, the gradual withdrawal of Israeli forces, and the exchange of hostages between both sides. However, Israeli air raids in Gaza City on Wednesday night killed at least 32 people, with further bombardments on Thursday destroying residential areas. Meanwhile, Palestinian resistance groups fired rockets into Israel, though no casualties were reported.

At the same time, Israeli forces have escalated their operations in the West Bank under a military campaign known as ‘Iron Wall.’ According to the Palestinian Ministry of Health, at least 70 Palestinians, including 10 children, have been killed in Israeli raids across Jenin, Tubas, Nablus, Tulkarem, Hebron, Bethlehem, and occupied East Jerusalem. The offensive, launched last month, has destroyed entire residential blocks in refugee camps, displaced thousands, and inflicted extensive damage to infrastructure. “The occupation authorities are expanding their all-out war on the Palestinian people in the West Bank,” said Nabil Abu Rudeineh, spokesperson for the Palestinian Authority.

The humanitarian crisis in both Gaza and the West Bank continues to worsen. In Jenin, where thousands have been forcibly displaced, Israeli forces demolished 23 buildings in the refugee camp over the weekend. In Tulkarem, 75% of the camp’s residents have fled due to ongoing military raids. Aid organizations warn that food, water, and medical supplies are critically low. “Since the ceasefire was implemented in Gaza, extreme violence has escalated across the West Bank. This is unacceptable,” Doctors Without Borders (MSF) stated. The organization reported that Israel’s blockade on Jenin is preventing access to vital aid, despite MSF efforts to deliver fuel, water, and emergency supplies.

Social media platforms have played a crucial role in documenting the crisis, with accounts such as Eyes on Palestine sharing footage of the destruction. Videos depict families searching for loved ones under the rubble and widespread displacement as Israeli military vehicles patrol occupied towns.

Despite the violence, some still hold hope for resolution. In Khan Younis, Palestinians celebrated the ceasefire agreement, waving flags and chanting in the streets. “I am happy. Yes, I am crying, but those are tears of joy,” said Ghada, a displaced mother of five. Meanwhile, Israeli families of hostages expressed relief at the prospect of their loved ones’ return.

However, the ceasefire remains fragile. Hardliners in Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s coalition oppose key aspects of the agreement, while Hamas has warned that without clear commitments to long-term peace, the truce may not hold. The coming weeks will determine whether the agreement can bring lasting stability to a region where over 62,000 Palestinians have been killed since the war began in October 2023.

As diplomatic efforts continue, the question remains: can this ceasefire pave the way for peace, or is the region bracing for yet another cycle of violence? But passengers – and politicians – are unlikely to cease activity at Reagan, at least until the cost of these valuable human lives, all lost far too soon, outweighs the convenience.

Hopes for a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas have been overshadowed by continued military operations, with Israeli forces intensifying their attacks in Gaza and launching a new offensive in the occupied West Bank.
