Having narrowly lost out against Dundee 2-3 in their opening fixture, AUWHC were keen to make amends against Glasgow 2s, who travelled up to the Granite City on a chilly autumnal afternoon.

Captained by Maya Donald, AUWHC started the match with a pass back. With four quarters of 17-and-a-half minutes, there was plenty of action to follow. A clever pass from Donald split the defence in the fourth minute, freeing Mia Kennedy who was fouled by the Glasgow backline, resulting in the first penalty corner of the game, which was well defended by the away side. A counterattack followed, with goalkeeper Maddie Fleming called into action who made a fine save to keep the score level.

After more early Aberdeen chances, the breakthrough came in the 14th minute, when Susanne Anderson drove the ball past the keeper and in off the post. Glasgow had little time to fight back before the end of the first quarter.

Just moments after the referee started the second quarter, Rebecca Gordon was played through on goal, where she skilfully rounded the keeper and rolled the ball in, doubling Aberdeen’s advantage with 20 minutes played. Glasgow urgently tried to get a foothold in the game, but Aberdeen’s defence held firm. Estelle Macaloney was kept busy in midfield as she wrestled with Glasgow, creating good chances as the second quarter ended. The teams swapped sides during the second break of the game, with Aberdeen looking to kill of Glasgow’s hopes of a comeback.

Aberdeen took hold of the third quarter and pilled on the pressure, looking for another chance to score. Glasgow defended well, including an off-the-line clearance to prevent a third for the home team. Glasgow had a big chance to claw back a goal but saw their penalty corner routine read by the Aberdeen defenders, who saw out the penultimate quarter with ease.

The final quarter was slowed down by the Aberdeen players, who looked set to win. Glasgow managed one final shot as the clock trickled down, but Aberdeen preserved their clean sheet with the final whistle blown soon after.

I caught up with AUWHC president Beth Smith to assess the team’s performance.

“I’m really pleased with the girls today; we’ve been training hard over the past few weeks, and this was a game we were targeting to win. We were full on from the start, pressing Glasgow and we managed two early goals. From there we were able to control the game at our pace. Really positive overall today!”

With the team now competing in the top division within Scotland, I asked Beth what challenges this presented.

“It’s a new skill level we need to adapt to. The girls in this league are fitter and faster, and we want to be on their level. I’m sure we are more than capable of succeeding in this league.”

I finished our chat with asking how AUWHC benefits all the girls involved.

“It’s such a fun experience, every Wednesday night when we meet in town, everyone has such a great time! We do all sorts of team bonding activities, and it’s nice to have so many girls looking out for each other.”

As BUCS returns for the new academic year, I visited ASV to watch Aberdeen University Women’s Hockey Club (AUWHC) for their second game in Scotland’s premier division, since being promoted last season.
