As she struggles with her mental health while preparing for a major career comeback, the demon exploits her fears, leading to horrific hallucinations. I won’t spoil the end, but director Parker Finn has laid a clear path for the opportunity of a third movie.

Naomi Scott played a pivotal role in elevating this movie far beyond its predecessor. Horror acting is a fine line to walk, and Scott delivered everything audiences could hope for—and more. She didn’t just convey fear; she embodied it, delivering a performance that felt genuinely terrifying. In addition to her gripping portrayal of pop star “Skye Riley” on the brink of insanity, Scott’s singing was as breathtaking as ever (as fans will remember from Aladdin). Her intense dance sequences were equally impressive, showcasing her versatility and leaving nothing to be desired. I left the movie asking myself, “Why hasn’t Scott been in more projects?” Hopefully, this film will help her break into the mainstream and land the roles she truly deserves.

Director Parker Finn also deserves his flowers for this flick; skillfully intertwining classic horror elements with a thoughtful exploration of mental health, crafting a narrative that appeals to both traditional horror enthusiasts and fans of psychological thrillers.

Despite its successes, Smile 2 does leave some lingering gaps, especially around the lore of the mysterious smiling entity that drives the franchise’s horror. With two films now under its belt, the series has yet to deeply explore the origins or motivations of this demon-like force, leaving audiences craving more substance behind its terrifying grin.

The lack of background detail on the entity feels like a missed opportunity, as it could have added a new level to the horror and heightened the stakes for the characters facing it. Hopefully, the next installment will dive into this unexplored territory, either by addressing fan theories or introducing new information that deepens our understanding of the entity’s role and origins. Finn has laid a strong foundation for this exploration in the next installment of the Smile series, and it will be exciting to see where this opportunity takes the developing saga.

Either way, Smile has the potential to reach iconic horror franchise status, much like Scream, thanks to its structure of introducing fresh leads in each film while retaining familiar characters to ground the story. I can envision Smile eventually achieving the cult classic status that Scream enjoys today, inspiring constant theories, fan communities, and even future Halloween costumes based on its chilling smiling motif.

This Halloween, the much-anticipated sequel to Smile has hit the big screen, bringing audiences face to face with the viral demon that shook the horror world in 2022.
