This November, the University of Aberdeen\u2019s staff and students are proudly joining the <\/span>Movember<\/span><\/i> movement, raising both funds and awareness to support men’s mental and physical health.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Movember<\/span><\/i> is a global movement, dedicated to fundraising for some of the most pressing issues faced by men in the modern world. The charity, as detailed on their website, recognises the crisis of male health that is unfolding across the globe \u2013 whether it be mental health, prostate cancer, or testicular cancer.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Individuals can sign up as part of a society or sports team, with members nominating themselves to take on the challenge of growing a moustache.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Each team contributes to the university\u2019s overall <\/span>Movember effort<\/span><\/i>, with universities across the country joining in friendly competition to see who can raise the most funds.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Aberdeen\u2019s <\/span>Movember<\/span><\/i> team has spoken to <\/span>The Gaudie<\/span><\/i>, detailing their reasoning for taking part in the hairy initiative.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI think we all joined <\/span>Movember<\/span><\/i> because we see the importance of men\u2019s mental health, and we want to be of the solution.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Mental health, testicular cancer and prostate cancer are taking men out of everyone\u2019s lives way too early, and <\/span>Movember<\/span><\/i> is the leading charity that works on making men\u2019s lives longer and happier.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Some of the individuals in the UoA Movember team spoke about their personal reasons for taking part in the challenge.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Thomas, a 4<\/span>th<\/span> year Engineering student, recalled:<\/span>
\n<\/span>\u201cI have had family members in need, and I have needed help myself \u2013 No one ever deserves to be alone when they need help\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Another fundraiser, Finlay, a 2<\/span>nd<\/span> Year Engineering student, wants to remove the shame from speaking out about mental health, saying:<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI want to help those who find it difficult to find support or feel ashamed to speak out\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The team also highlighted the importance of staff and students getting involved in the cause:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Signing up also allows you to take part in the university challenge, where we have been competing to raise more money than other universities across the country. \u201c\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

If you can\u2019t grow a moustache \u2013 no worries! There are plenty of other ways to get involved.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

First and foremost, donate! You can support individuals taking on the moustache-growing challenge by sponsoring them directly. These sponsorship opportunities are easy to find online, allowing you to choose exactly who you\u2019d like to support with your donation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

If donating directly isn’t for you, there are multiple fundraisers this month to support the cause. There\u2019s a quiz night at The Foundry on the 13<\/span>th<\/span>, a fun run\/polar plunge at the beach on the 24<\/span>th<\/span>, and last but not least, a charity football match between the University\u2019s football and rugby club on the 29<\/span>th, <\/span>hosted at Hillhead.<\/span>
\n<\/span>So far, UoA is 1<\/span>st<\/span> in Scotland and 3<\/span>rd<\/span> in the UK for fundraising, so join the Movember movement this November and help make a difference in men\u2019s mental and physical health \u2013 every bit counts! <\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
