However, she began struggling with mysterious health issues—severe weight loss, memory gaps, and frequent unconscious episodes—that deeply worried her family and friends, who feared she may have Alzheimer’s.

The truth, however, was far darker.

In September 2020, Gisele and her family’s world unraveled forever. Domanique was arrested for an upskirting crime, which led police to examine his phone and laptop. It was here authorities found a horrifying collection of photos and videos showing Gisèle being drugged and raped.

Investigators revealed that Domanique had invited dozens of men into their home, enabling them to repeatedly assault his wife while she was unconscious, fulfilling his ‘sexual fantasies’.

After learning the truth at the police station, Gisèle packed two suitcases, filed for divorce, and waived her right to anonymity in the following court case. She chose to publicly share her story to expose the horrific betrayal she suffered and to give a voice to survivors like her.

Her sacrifice of privacy has captivated the globe, turning the shame back onto the perpetrators of sexual abuse, rather than the victims.

As I followed Gisèle’s court case, I was deeply moved by her extraordinary courage. News headlines around the world painted a grim picture – constant attacks on women’s rights in Afghanistan, the troubling resurgence of certain American political figures – all serving as painful reminders of the dangers women still face. Yet, amidst this, Gisèle emerged as a rare beacon of hope. She had somehow turned an unimaginable ordeal into an empowering campaign for survivors worldwide.

As a journalist, a student, and a past survivor of abuse, I began to wonder: how had her case resonated with those around me in the student community of Scotland? What impact did her bravery and sacrifice have on young people here? Driven by these questions, I set out to understand how her story had touched lives and inspired change in my own community.

Gisèle’s Impact in Scotland

Gisèle’s strength hasn’t only made waves in France; it has also resonated with students across Scotland. I spoke with a group of students from different Scottish universities to hear their thoughts on the court case and Gisèle’s decision to publicly express her identity as a survivor.

A handful of these students are victims of sexual abuse and have bravely come forward to share the impact Gisèle has made upon them. Some of these individuals have been protected using aliases due to the sensitive nature of the topic.

Many students expressed deep admiration for Gisèle’s courage. Kirsty, an 18-year-old from Edinburgh, shared her perspective on the case:

“In my opinion, Gisèle’s story is one of utmost bravery. I believe that through her testimonies, her determination, and resilience, she will have given numerous survivors the courage they need to come forward about their own experience with sexual violence.”

She continued, noting how much Gisèle’s testimony resonated with her as a survivor of sexual violence:

“As someone who has experienced sexual assault and felt a great deal of shame, especially as the perpetrator was someone whom I thought I could trust, Gisèle’s story has filled me with hope and courage to not let what happened make me feel ashamed; that he is the one who should feel uncomfortable.”

For Kirsty, Gisèle’s decision to go public served as a reminder of the importance of solidarity and visibility in the fight for justice:

“Gisèle has given voice to the numerous women who have experienced rape within marriage. She has raised awareness of the fact that rape and sexual assault can happen to anyone, anywhere, by anybody, and that just because you’re in a relationship with someone – even being married to them for 50 years – it does not give anyone the right to take ownership of your body.”

Will, a student from a Scottish Drama school shared how he feels Gisèle’s bravery had transcended the lines of gender, and has offered hope to anyone who has experienced sexual abuse:

“As a man who’s been the victim of sexual violence and harassment in the past, it can sometimes feel like there really isn’t a representative of male victimhood:

“But I believe that her story, and how she has flipped the narrative, taken control, and fought for victims to instead be known as survivors is so integral to anyone who has suffered sexual violence.”

Will expanded, highlighting how Gisèle had made room for all in this conversation about survivors:

“Many male victims feel the stigma, and are quiet about their issues, but I definitely think her being a strong voice is helping others find theirs “

Other students echoed similar sentiments, reflecting on how Gisèle’s story opened conversations around resilience, identity, and justice in their own lives. Kieran, a college student, spoke about the impact of Gisèle’s story on his understanding of advocacy for marital rape:

“I think it’s just something that really needs to be brought into the light. The facts are out there about how much rape occurs between loved ones, but I guess everyone would always want to look at their own loved ones as the exception”

Whilst devastating, Kieran’s point is right – 6/7 rapes against women are committed by someone they know.

However, there is hope going forward. I talked to Emily, a student in Aberdeen, about ambitions for survivors in the future:

“She’s a role model for victims of assault everywhere, she’s saying no matter the age, no matter the circumstances, you deserve justice.”

For these students, Gisèle’s courage has become a rallying cry – one that transcends borders, gender, and age. Her decision to speak out has empowered young survivors in Scotland to reject shame, demand justice, and recognize that their voices hold the power to reshape how society views abuse.

Gisèle’s bravery has reminded them that even the darkest experiences can fuel transformation, and that silence does not have to be their legacy. Inspired by her, they see the potential to redefine survival as a source of strength and to stand together in a collective demand for accountability and change.

[87
194,717,714,715,716
322
0":"post-4712","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-features","8":"tag-amelia-mcglynn","9":"tag-drug-abuse","10":"tag-giselle","11":"tag-giselle-pelicot","12":"tag-sexual-violence
["Features
Features
Amelia McGlynn","drug abuse","giselle","giselle pelicot","sexual violence
Amelia McGlynn","drug abuse","giselle","giselle pelicot","sexual violence
["GET
