Despite the fact that December is yet to come, many members of the city have already started the journey of preparing for the holidays, either by blasting Christmas songs on repeat, buying presents before the Christmas shopping rush comes about, or decorating their house with a variation of lights and Santa Clause décor (and yes, I have been an unwilling witness to all three of these events). As the city is officially beginning to decide that it’s Christmas season (though it is currently still November), there are a variation of seasonal activities popping up, most of which I’m sure everyone can enjoy. In this article, I’ve decided to go through a few of them with you.

One of the most notable mentions, since it’s something that has been a staple for many years in this city, is the Aberdeen Christmas Village. Many would say that it is a time of joy for everyone, since the bright atmosphere of the Christmas Village prompts many excited reactions from those experiencing it the first time. Every year that I’ve gone to visit it, I’ve always noticed happy kids running from one attraction to another, and the older generations appreciating all the decorations that have been strung about. The Village itself is set up just outside of the Marischal College: It features fairground rides, with an apparent addition of the Ferris Wheel this year, alongside market stalls full of all kinds of trinkets, an outdoor ice-skating rink, and a variation of food and drinks to keep everyone content. Though, be warned, you might come across prices that could potentially make your eyes widen. Despite it though, I always love getting a Baileys Hot Chocolate whenever I visit. They are one of my guilty pleasures, I must admit. And so, starting from the 14th of November to the 31st of December, make sure to go on a wander through the Village if you can.

To add to the list, I would recommend going out and experiencing the fine dining of Aberdeen. Obviously, as one of the best-known perks of the season, it won’t be long now till most of the local restaurants will start to offer their Christmas menus to their customers. From turkey roasts to Christmas specials, and a variation of desserts, there will be plenty of dishes and places to choose from. Personally, from experience, I can certainly say that some are better than others in the food category, but all places are bound to decorate their establishments in appreciation of the seasonal spirit, which will brighten the atmosphere regardless of the mediocre food (one should hope). It’s always more fun to go out during the holidays anyways (obviously after we have all survived the essays and the exams awaiting before us).

And if going to a restaurant doesn’t excite you as much, there are always other things to consider looking out for in December. From a range of Christmas concerts, like the Granite City Brass, which is being held at Cowdray Hall on the 19th of December, to visiting the theatre for some pantomimes, like the Fairytale of New York, which will be held at the Musical Hall on the 8th of December or Elf the Musical, held on the 30th of November at the P&J Live. These are just a few to name, but a lot more are left to experience if you are interested in going along to see the performances.

And lastly, to top it all off, don’t forget to create your own Christmas events. With the days getting darker earlier now, and the weather forcing me to double layer already, it’s best to make the most of the sunlight that we have available. So don’t forget to go out and explore Aberdeen your own way. Go on walks, make visits to the pubs and see what deals they have on, or drag your friends along for a day out. Have as much fun as possible and soon you’ll start to feel the Christmas spirit anyways. Let’s just hope that this year we get good enough snow to enjoy a proper white Christmas.

Since it’s that time of the year again, Aberdeen is currently going through the wonderful journey of being overwhelmed by Christmas decorations.
