From the 6th-12th October 2025, Scotland and Aberdeen University celebrated Women in Sport Week. The theme of this year is ‘Celebrating Being Active’, and the movement aims to promote the many ways in which women can be a part of sport and athletic activity. The week aims to promote collaboration and activity within sport, and shine a light on women in sport. AUSA took part in promoting the campaign and the planning of events.
The week celebrates all women involved in sport, from players and coaches to volunteers and staff. The week had fixtures for tennis, water polo, hockey, netball, rugby and volleyball. It intends to promote the participation of women in sport and physical activity, along with the benefits socially and actively this can bring.
2025 is the ninth year of the campaign. It is supported nationally by organisations such as SportScotland and Scottish Sport. The Scottish governments cite some of the aims of the week as: providing opportunity for participation for all, providing examples of women and girls in sport for others to see, and providing role models to inspire others to be active and participate in sport.
In other news, there are two new sports teams at the university. Aberdeen Women’s Cricket will soon play their first BUCS game. Their captain, Ruth McKay, cites impressive commitment levels from the team members in preparation for their first match. They will be playing against Edinburgh 1s on Sunday the 26th October at 9am.
The team’s captain notes that the team is comprised of members with a variety of specialties, which should set them in good stead to face the challenges of playing in competitive matches. She herself is an experienced cricketer, captaining Scotland Emerging girls in intra fixtures against Scotland A and at Malvern College Festival.
They are the University of Aberdeen’s first women’s cricket BUCS team, and thus the team is an important addition to the roster of University teams. The team is running morning training sessions to improve their level before the start of the season. This season they will be playing against teams from Edinburgh, St. Andrews and Stirling
Another new addition to Aberdeen’s sports societies is that of the Pool Society. Dormant since 2020, the society has recently been reinstated. They are open ‘from relaxed to competitive levels’, according to their social media, and run both social and competitive events.
The opening week of the society was a huge success, with around 30 people attending and similar numbers projected for the second week. The society was brought back by a group of students passionate about the sport.
The society plans to play BUCS inter-university fixtures in the future, however for the time being they play their matches against other teams in Riley’s in the city centre.
Several other societies have laid dormant since 2020, and any could be brought back by students passionate about them. Both cricket and pool provide good models for the expansion of sport at Aberdeen University, adding to the more than fifty current sport societies.
