Five people were killed after the collapse of a railway bridge undergoing construction on Monday in Eastern China. The incident occurred at approximately 5:46 p.m. on the 2nd of February at a major construction site of a railway bridge project in Yancheng City in the Jiangsu province.
Officials stated that the 95-metre main span of the partly built Yuegang Bridge suddenly collapsed, entrapping workers beneath the concrete and steel debris. Emergency services were immediately dispatched to the scene, with both the municipal and country governments in Yancheng coordinating with the rescue and on-site operations. Residents reported that emergency responders quickly sealed off the area as rescue efforts began.
One local resident said: “As ordinary residents, we are grateful to them and want to commend their efforts.”
Rescue teams managed to pull two workers from the wreckage alive, however, later died in the hospital due to their injuries. Search-and-rescue teams worked through the night to continue to search for the three additional missing workers before their bodies were recovered on Tuesday morning, bringing the confirmed death toll to five.
The bridge was a part of the Lianyungang-Shanghai railway line, a key high-speed rail network being built by China Railway Construction Corporation Limited, a subsidiary of China’s state-owned rail construction group, and was intended to improve connectivity across China’s eastern coastal region by creating a north-south water transport corridor.
Images broadcast by state media showed a large section of the bridge lying on the ground, with cranes and heavy machinery deployed around the wreckage. Police established cordons around the area as investigators examined the site, and waterway traffic beneath the bridge was temporarily restricted in the Tongyu river area, as reported by the state Xinhua news agency.
Local government authorities stated that rescue operations were completed and have now shifted focus onto determining the cause of the collapse. Engineering experts and inspectors can be expected to conduct an array of analyses, such as structural, procedural and regulatory, as part of the official investigation. No additional casualties were reported following the incident and construction at the site has been suspended pending the outcome of the inquiry. At present, authorities have not released any preliminary findings, and it currently remains unclear what led to the collapse of the structure while still under construction.
This incident follows several recent bridge collapses in China. In November 2025, the 762-metre Hongqi bridge in the southwestern province of Sichuan of China collapsed just mere months after opening, however authorities reported no casualties. Earlier, in August 2025, 12 workers were killed when a part of the Jianzha bridge under construction across the Huang He River “Yellow River” collapsed in northwest China, an incident state media attributed to a failure in critical steel cables used in the structure.
Industrial accidents remain a concern in developing parts of the country, and such failures have prompted calls for enhanced oversight of construction safety and adherence to engineering standards. In response to previous incidents, the Chinese government periodically reviewed safety standards and disciplinary measures.
