After the art gallery underwent renovations in 2019, many of its possessions were put into storage.

Since the council has begun efforts to record the items, many have been listed as “missing”.

A report revealed the cost of the missing items amounts to £195 443.

It is believed that the misplacement may be due to a system error.

A Freedom of Information request made by the BBC revealed that records include items that have been held by the Aberdeen Art Gallery in the past, as well as the ones that they currently hold. Consequently, many of the losses may be historic.

However, the council’s report also showed that 92 losses were due to theft and 525 were unconfirmed in their location.

Despite the scale of the items missing, Aberdeen City Council believes they can be recovered or accounted for.

Both Aberdeen City Council and the Aberdeen Art Gallery have been contacted for a statement. Aberdeen City Council responded with minutes from a risk assessment meeting but the Aberdeen Art Gallery did not respond.
